Hillsboro’s 5-0 start hinges on defensive resilience against Staunton
The Hiltoppers overcame a first-quarter deficit by forcing four turnovers, extending a winning streak not seen since 2016.

Hillsboro has extended its season record to 5-0 following a 42-22 victory over Staunton in the South Central Conference. The result marks the first time the Hiltoppers have opened a season with five consecutive wins since 2016, a period that ultimately concluded with a 6-4 finish.
The game was defined by a shift in possession control. Trailing 10-0 after the first quarter, Hillsboro forced three quick turnovers to generate 35 consecutive points. This defensive surge allowed the team to reverse the momentum and secure the lead for the remainder of the match.
Tytin Wells provided the offensive foundation, rushing 26 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. On the defensive side, Noah Satterlee returned a 29-yard interception for a touchdown, while Jalen Stewart recorded another interception. Senior nose guard Mason Currie also recovered a lost fumble, marking his second consecutive game with a defensive takeaway.
For Staunton, the loss drops their overall record to 2-3. The Bulldogs committed four turnovers, which is the second consecutive week they have surrendered the ball that many times. Their previous defeat came against Carlinville, where they also struggled with ball security.
First-year Staunton coach Zach Klaustermeier noted that his team’s first two losses were by a combined nine points. He suggested that the four turnovers in this match were a significant factor in the outcome, maintaining that his squad remains competitive despite the setback.
Hillsboro’s current run is part of a broader historical context for the program. The last time the team won six straight games to start a season was in 2006 under coach Rich Stewart. The 2016 season, which saw the previous 5-0 start, ended with four losses in the final five games, a trajectory Hillsboro is currently working to avoid.
