Heat front office balances Giannis pursuit with broader roster strategy
With the Milwaukee Bucks’ ownership reportedly poised to make a move this month, Miami is managing a complex landscape that includes draft capital, salary-cap equations, and key free-agent decisions.

The Miami Heat front office is currently navigating a strategic landscape defined by a high-stakes pursuit of Giannis Antetokounmpo, a move described by analysts as a "Hail Mary" that demands the dedication of significant resources. This pursuit is being managed alongside broader roster requirements, including the NBA draft and free agency decisions, ensuring the organisation does not fall into the paralysis seen during the previous "Summer of Damian Lillard".
Adam Simon and the scouting staff are actively working the draft and monitoring overseas events, while Andy Elisburg manages complex salary-cap equations. Analysts suggest that focusing on Antetokounmpo requires committing substantial assets, which may limit flexibility for other targets. Unlike the previous offseason where the team was placed on hold pending a major acquisition, the Heat are maintaining operational momentum across multiple fronts.
The Milwaukee Bucks’ ownership is reportedly poised to make a move this month, creating a potential window for the Heat to pursue alternative offseason plans if the Antetokounmpo pursuit fails. This timeline provides a buffer for Miami to execute a secondary strategy, should the primary objective not materialise. The Heat are required by NBA rule to make a first-round selection at No. 13 due to a previously dealt future pick, but can flip the selected player immediately after the draft to finalise a trade package.
Regarding roster composition, the Heat may retain Tyler Herro through the trade deadline if he is not traded for Antetokounmpo, particularly if Andrew Wiggins opts out and Norman Powell leaves in free agency. The combination of Herro and Powell did not work effectively during the previous season, and the Heat have limited sizable contracts available for trade, except in scenarios involving Wiggins or Powell.
It remains uncertain whether Wiggins will opt out or if Powell will leave in free agency, and the specific outcome of the Bucks' ownership move is unconfirmed. However, the structural requirement for the Heat to select a player at No. 13 means that if they trade this pick in a package for Antetokounmpo, the Bucks must accept the player selected at that spot, effectively finalising the deal upon selection.
