‘The stoppage was early’: Eddie Hearn reacts to Usyk vs Rico ending
Promoter claims referee intervened too early as Verhoeven’s professional debut concludes

Promoter Eddie Hearn has publicly questioned the timing of the referee’s intervention in the recent professional boxing bout between Oleksandr Usyk and Rico Verhoeven, arguing the stoppage was premature. Verhoeven, making his professional debut, was knocked down and subsequently stopped late in the 11th round. Hearn, who manages Verhoeven, stated on social media that the fighter deserved the opportunity to continue into the 12th round.

Hearn argued that the bell had effectively sounded before the stoppage, noting that Verhoeven was in a defensive position and aware of his location. The promoter praised Verhoeven’s concentration, belief, and boxing IQ for a debutant, and credited trainer Peter Fury with the game plan. Hearn acknowledged that Usyk struggled with the rhythm but managed to find a way to win, preventing what he described as the greatest upset in boxing history.

The fight between Usyk and Verhoeven had been closely contested, with judges scoring the first 10 rounds evenly on two cards and Verhoeven ahead on the third. Had the fight ended at the conclusion of the 11th round, one card would have been even, and two would have had Usyk slightly ahead. Hearn expressed his personal view that he had Verhoeven ahead by a couple of rounds going into the 11th.

Hearn maintained that Usyk would have needed a clearer stoppage in the 12th round or would have edged out a decision, but insisted that both camps deserved the chance to let the bout unfold. Verhoeven has also stated he wishes he had the chance to recover in the 12th round or at least go out on his shield.

Hearn concluded his assessment by describing the contest as fascinating and praising the work ethic, mindset, and resilience displayed by both competitors. He noted that Usyk did what champions do, while recognising the high level of performance from Verhoeven despite the early conclusion.
