NBA Draft: Hawks prioritize long-term playmaking with Kingston Flemings at No. 8
Atlanta deviates from pre-draft speculation by selecting University of Houston guard with eighth overall pick

The Atlanta Hawks selected 6-foot-4 lead guard Kingston Flemings from the University of Houston with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft on 24 June 2026. The selection marks a distinct departure from widespread pre-draft expectations that the franchise would prioritise adding size to its frontline.

Instead of choosing 7-foot-3 centre Aday Mara from Michigan, the Hawks opted for Flemings to address long-term needs at the point guard position. The organisation views the young guard as the future solution for on-ball creation, aiming to provide additional playmaking support for All-Star forward Jalen Johnson.

The decision comes as the Hawks’ roster features CJ McCollum, who has re-signed for the upcoming season, alongside Johnson and Jonathan Kuminga. While many analysts anticipated the team would select Mara to shore up the frontline alongside McCollum, the Hawks have instead focused on lineup symmetry and backcourt depth.

Flemings is described as a versatile player capable of scoring at three levels, with strong court vision and reliable decision-making. The selection suggests the franchise is prioritising long-term development over immediate impact, acknowledging that Flemings may not have a significant role in his first year due to his age and development stage.

With the Washington Wizards selecting AJ Dybantsa first overall, the Utah Jazz choosing Darryn Peterson second, and the Memphis Grizzlies picking Cameron Boozer third, the Hawks’ move indicates a willingness to address size requirements later in the draft or through free agency. This approach positions the team to build a roster centred around sustained playmaking rather than immediate physical dominance.
