Hawaii Baseball’s Magdaleno Named Pitcher of the Week Ahead of Tournament Elimination
Head coach Rich Hill describes the junior’s recent form as the most impressive stretch witnessed in four decades of coaching, as the team faces a win-or-go-home scenario in the Big West Tournament.

Hawaii right-handed pitcher Isaiah Magdaleno has been named the Big West Pitcher of the Week for the third consecutive time, a recognition that arrives just ahead of the team’s critical play-in match in the Big West Tournament. The honour follows a dominant performance last Wednesday, where Magdaleno recorded a one-hit, 14-strikeout shutout against Cal State Northridge.
Over his last three starts, the junior from Los Angeles has posted one earned run, six hits, 39 strikeouts, and two walks across 26 innings. His recent form has drawn significant praise from Hawaii head coach Rich Hill, who described the stretch as the most impressive he has witnessed in four decades of coaching.
Magdaleno, who returned to the starting rotation after spending the previous season as a closer, is now focused on the immediate challenge ahead. The Hawaii baseball team prepares to face Cal State Fullerton in the tournament’s play-in round in Irvine, California. The stakes are absolute for the Rainbow Warriors: the winner advances to the double-elimination round, while the loser heads directly into the offseason.
Despite the high pressure, Magdaleno has pointed to the team’s previous experience in the inaugural Big West Tournament, specifically last year’s play-in victory over UC Santa Barbara, as a source of confidence. He noted that while newer players are excited for their first tournament appearance, the returners understand the environment and are prepared for the intensity.
Hawaii enters the contest ranked third nationally with a 3.44 earned run average and a plus-2.67 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The team’s preparation has included extensive mental conditioning, with Hill emphasising process over outcome to mitigate external distractions. As the team flies to California, the focus remains on executing the fundamentals required to secure one of the tournament’s five berths.
