Manchester City’s Josko Gvardiol discusses Pep Guardiola departure as exit talk intensifies
Defender confirms he will assess future after World Cup amid interest from Europe’s elite

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol has publicly praised former manager Pep Guardiola following the Catalan’s departure from the club, describing the exit as unfortunate while highlighting the positive impact Guardiola had on players’ development. The comments coincide with intensifying speculation regarding Gvardiol’s own future, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Real Madrid reportedly interested in signing the 24-year-old.

Manchester City have offered Gvardiol a lucrative, long-term contract extension and wish to retain him, but the defender has indicated he will assess his situation after the FIFA World Cup. Incoming manager Enzo Maresca has agreed a three-year deal in principle to replace Guardiola and is expected to hold talks with Gvardiol regarding his commitment to the club’s future project.

Gvardiol, who is in the final two years of his current contract, stated he is confident Manchester City will “choose the right new coach & continue where we left off.” He noted that everyone who had the chance to work with Guardiola became a better player and person, echoing sentiments previously expressed by former teammates such as Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva.

The timing of Guardiola’s exit adds a layer of complexity to Gvardiol’s situation. The former manager was among those most vocal about wanting to keep the Croatian at the Etihad Stadium, having benefitted from the defender’s versatility across centre-half and left-back since 2023. It remains to be seen whether Maresca shares that conviction in equal measure.

City director of football Hugo Viana is eager to secure a resolution on Gvardiol’s future before the summer transfer window reaches its critical phase. While Gvardiol’s confidence in the club’s direction is an encouraging sign, his deliberate ambiguity over his own future suggests the coming weeks will be pivotal for the defender’s career trajectory.
