Grand Theft Auto VI is warping the video game release calendar
Major publishers delay titles to 2027 or cluster releases in autumn to avoid Take-Two Interactive’s November launch

The confirmed November 19 launch date for Grand Theft Auto VI has forced a significant restructuring of the global video game industry’s release calendar. Major publishers, including Sony, Microsoft, and Capcom, are strategically delaying or rescheduling high-profile titles to avoid direct competition with the anticipated sales surge of the Take-Two Interactive title. This shift has created a dense cluster of major releases in the autumn months, particularly September and October, while several other anticipated titles have been pushed into 2027.

During Sony’s State of Play showcase, the publisher confirmed release dates for several titles now competing in the pre-November window. Wolverine is scheduled for September 15, followed by Dune: Awakening on September 22, Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall on September 24, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword on September 25. Ace Combat 8 is set for October 2, joining Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is also scheduled for an October release.

The pressure from the GTA VI launch has also accelerated delays for titles moving into 2027. During Summer Game Fest Live, Sega announced Stranger Than Heaven and its Virtua Fighter spinoff Crossroads for 2027, while Bandai Namco revealed Gundam Rogue Orbit for the same year. Capcom announced a massive expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds for 2027, and Maverick Games revealed Clutch, a debut Forza-like racer, for 2027. Telltale Games also announced The Wolf Among Us 2 for 2027.

Microsoft explicitly cited the crowded calendar and GTA VI by name when delaying Fable to 2027. The company stated that part of the reasoning is that the current year is packed with incredible games. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy VII Revelation was revealed for release next spring, further thinning the immediate pipeline.

Despite the industry-wide shift, Nintendo has not yet announced its holiday lineup. The company has instead confirmed upcoming releases for Star Fox on June 25, Rhythm Heaven Groove on July 2, and Splatoon Raiders on July 23. Industry observers note that Nintendo is the most likely candidate to buck these trends and launch a major title in November, potentially powering the Switch 2 through the critical holiday season.

The strategic avoidance of November highlights the immense market influence of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick has stated he expects to establish new record levels of operating performance driven by the November 19 launch. With GTA V having sold nearly 230 million copies across three console generations, publishers view the November window as a high-risk period for cannibalising consumer spending.

However, the resulting logjam of major releases in September and October presents its own challenges. Control Resonant creative director Mikael Kasurinen expressed confidence in his title despite the crowded window, citing a distinctive and unique experience. The industry now faces a period where avoiding one massive hit may simply result in competing against a dense field of other major releases.
