Grantsville Cowboys Erase 12-Point Deficit to Defeat San Juan 30-20
Coach David Millward credits defensive resilience for creating offensive opportunities after early scoring struggles left the team with four red-zone possessions without points.
Grantsville overcame a 12-0 deficit to secure a 30-20 victory against San Juan at Snow College on Friday, erasing the early shortfall by scoring 30 unanswered points. The win was anchored by a defensive performance that forced seven San Juan turnovers, including multiple interceptions and a fumble, shifting momentum after the Broncos had initially established themselves as one of Utah’s most dangerous offensive units.
San Juan opened the scoring with quarterback Beau Yeomans executing a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by a 47-yard touchdown pass to Brigg Palmer in the first quarter. The 12-0 lead appeared insurmountable as Grantsville’s offence struggled to penetrate San Juan’s territory, throwing two interceptions deep in Broncos’ range. However, the defensive unit prevented further scoring, providing the offence with repeated opportunities to mount a response.
Grantsville coach David Millward acknowledged the inefficiency in the red zone, noting that the team left significant scoring potential on the board. “We had interceptions in the end zone. I think we had four red-zone possessions without points,” Millward said, highlighting the disparity between defensive pressure and offensive conversion rates during the early stages of the match.
The turning point arrived in the second quarter when Carter Bell scored on a 9-yard run, reducing the deficit to 12-7. Late in the half, Mack Hammond intercepted Yeomans, setting up Crew Allred with a 34-yard run. With 2.4 seconds remaining before halftime, Allred connected with Ty Holm on a 24-yard touchdown pass, giving Grantsville a 13-12 lead.
The Cowboys extended their advantage in the second half by capitalising on a Palmer fumble at the San Juan 30-yard line. Bell scored from the goal line, and a successful two-point conversion pushed the lead to 21-12. Bell added a 7-yard touchdown later in the quarter, and Cache Hammond kicked a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to make it 30-12.
San Juan managed a late surge with a 39-yard touchdown pass from Yeomans to Palmer and a two-point conversion run by Randall Black, bringing the score to 30-20. However, the Broncos’ final drive ended when Yeomans threw an interception to Graeson Warren, preserving Grantsville’s comeback victory.
