Gotham FC Secures Victory Over Spirit in Record-Breaking New York Fixture
Rose Lavelle’s goal and Sam Kerr’s return mark a pivotal moment for Gotham FC as they replicate last year’s championship result against the Washington Spirit.

Gotham FC defeated the Washington Spirit 1-0 at Citi Field in New York, securing a victory that mirrored their success in the previous year’s National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) championship final. The match, described as the Queens Classic, drew a sellout crowd of 42,175, establishing a new attendance record for a women’s sporting event in New York City. The result halted the Washington Spirit’s three-game winning streak, leaving both clubs with identical 8-3-3 records.
Rose Lavelle provided the decisive moment for Gotham FC, scoring in the 37th minute with a long chip from an angle to the far post. This marked her third goal of the season and replicated her performance in the prior year’s title match, where she also scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory. The outcome underscores Gotham’s consistency in high-stakes encounters against the Spirit, who now face the prospect of breaking their recent momentum.
The fixture also served as the long-awaited return of Australian striker Sam Kerr to the NWSL. Substituting into the game in the 64th minute, Kerr ended a six-year absence from the league, having spent the majority of that time at Chelsea in Europe. The 32-year-old, who previously played for Sky Blue, which later became Gotham, and the Chicago Stars, remains the NWSL’s top regular-season scorer with 77 career goals. Kerr, who signed with Gotham last month, described the return as a significant shift from her time in Europe.
Conditions at Citi Field presented challenges, with temperatures in the 90s and an air quality advisory due to wildfires in Canada. These factors necessitated two hydration breaks in each half. The match also saw an early disruption when Gotham’s Jordynn Dudley collided with Spirit’s Esme Morgan, resulting in Dudley subbing out with a suspected concussion. Despite these variables, the game proceeded to a conclusion that highlighted the growing commercial and spectator appeal of the NWSL in the New York market.
The victory comes as Gotham FC prepares for a significant infrastructural transition. The club announced earlier this month that it will begin playing at the new 25,000-seat Etihad Park, adjacent to Citi Field, starting in 2028. This move is part of a partnership with Major League Soccer club New York City FC. Until then, Gotham typically hosts home matches at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey. The record attendance at Citi Field signals strong local support for the team as it navigates this transition and continues its competitive campaign.
