Google's Universal Cart will keep an eye on your shopping
New AI-driven tools aim to streamline shopping across Search, YouTube, and Gmail while reducing payment friction for retailers.

Google has announced a significant expansion of its e-commerce capabilities with the introduction of Universal Cart and the Universal Commerce Protocol. The new suite of tools is designed to aggregate purchases across the company’s ecosystem, including Search, YouTube, and Gmail, while utilising artificial intelligence to optimise the shopping experience for consumers and retailers alike.

Universal Cart functions as a centralised shopping tool that allows users to add products from various corners of Google’s services into a single interface. Once items are added, the system employs agentic AI to identify the lowest available prices, compare price trends, and verify stock availability. The technology is also designed to anticipate potential purchasing errors; for instance, it can flag compatibility issues between components, such as parts for a custom-built personal computer, before the user finalises their transaction.

The platform integrates with Google Wallet to enhance value for users by identifying merchant preferences and loyalty schemes. Google states the system aims to maximise points and highlight additional savings opportunities. For transactions, the tool is built to create a seamless interface between Google Shopping and the retailer, a process that is reportedly faster and more efficient when the merchant supports Google Wallet.

Major retailers including Nike, Sephora, Target, Fenty, and Steve Madden have been noted as supporting Google Wallet for these seamless transactions. This integration is part of a broader strategy to reduce friction in online payments, with the newly introduced Universal Commerce Protocol specifically designed to smooth the operational gaps between various online payment platforms and retail partners.

The rollout schedule for these initiatives is phased. Universal Cart will launch this summer in Google Shopping, Search, and Gemini, with integrations for YouTube and Gmail scheduled for later in the year. The Universal Commerce Protocol is set to arrive in Canada and Australia in the coming months, followed by the United Kingdom. In the United States, the protocol will soon integrate with YouTube, supporting the platform’s ongoing evolution into a dedicated online shopping channel.
