Google Unveils Gemini-First Laptops and Major Android Updates Ahead of I/O
New laptops from partners like Acer and Asus will ship this fall, while Android receives updates on widgets, Chrome, and security measures.
Google has officially unveiled a new line of laptops branded as Googlebooks, marking a strategic shift toward hardware designed from the ground up for its Gemini Intelligence ecosystem. The announcement was made during a virtual event titled "Android Show: I/O Edition," which took place on Tuesday ahead of the company's annual developer conference.
The new laptop line is being developed in partnership with major hardware manufacturers including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. These devices are scheduled to launch this fall and will feature a unique "Magic Pointer" cursor with Gemini built in, alongside compatibility that allows users to run Android phone apps directly from their Googlebook. The hardware is intended to offer personal and proactive assistance, distinguishing it from previous iterations of laptop design.
On the software front, Google introduced a novel feature allowing users to "vibe-code" their own custom widgets using natural language descriptions. This capability will initially roll out to Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel devices this summer, enabling users to create dashboard elements such as meal prep recipes without writing code. The update also brings Gemini intelligence directly into the Chrome browser on Android, allowing for content summarisation and hands-on inquiry.
Significant changes have also been made to Android Auto, which now supports video playback in 60fps full HD on supported vehicles. The interface has been refreshed to accommodate various screen shapes and includes redesigned media applications for YouTube Music and Spotify. Furthermore, the assistant is now available hands-free for drivers to ask questions or place food orders via DoorDash, expanding its utility while on the road.
Security enhancements represent another key pillar of the announcement, with Google expanding global theft protections to all Android users. These measures, which include Remote Lock and Theft Detection Lock, will be enabled by default on new Android 17 devices and those upgrading to the latest operating system. The update also introduces longer wait times between failed PIN attempts and allows law enforcement to access device IMEI numbers from the lock screen on supported versions.
Additional refinements include an overhaul of the 4,000 Android emojis to make them appear more expressive and less flat, as well as a new "Screen Reactions" feature for recording users and their screens simultaneously. Google also optimised its capture-to-upload pipeline to ensure photo and video quality remains sharp when posting to social platforms, while expanding cross-platform file sharing capabilities between Android and iOS devices.
