Google Unveils Agentic AI Strategy with New Information Agents and Search Redesign
At Google I/O 2026, the company announced continuous background agents for market and personal tracking, alongside significant pricing adjustments and a major overhaul of its core search interface.

Google has announced the launch of new AI-powered "information agents" at its I/O 2026 keynote, marking a significant shift from traditional reactive search tools to proactive, continuous monitoring systems. Designed to operate in the background 24/7, these agents synthesise information from multiple sources to provide actionable insights, explain context, and alert users to updates regarding their specific interests. The feature represents a substantial evolution of Google Alerts, which the company launched in 2003, moving beyond simple notifications to complex synthesis and insight generation.
The new agents are capable of tracking a wide range of topics, including stock markets, flight prices, sports teams, housing trends, and weather. For instance, an agent focused on financial markets could monitor share prices, track breaking news, summarise earnings reports, and alert users to major changes throughout the day. This functionality is part of a broader redesign of Google Search, which includes a new "intelligent search box" described as the biggest change to the platform in over 25 years. The updated interface is designed to support longer, conversational queries, supported by a new AI-powered query suggestion system that goes beyond traditional autocomplete.
Users can create and manage these agents through AI Mode in Search using natural language prompts. Active topics are managed via the AI Mode history, where users can refine or disable alerts. The rollout of information agents is scheduled for this summer, with an initial launch limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States. This deployment follows the recent introduction of Gemini 3.5 and the rollout of Gemini Spark, a 24/7 agent assistant with Gmail integration, to trusted testers.
In a move to adjust its commercial structure, Google announced a reduction in the price of its AI Ultra subscription tier from $250 to $200 per month. The company is also introducing a new $100 monthly plan aimed at power users. Additional product updates included "OmniFlash," a universal shopping cart with agentic purchasing capabilities for subscribers, and enhancements to the "Flow" creative toolset for generating video and music.
The announcement underscores Google’s broader strategic push to challenge competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic by deploying agentic AI systems that take initiative rather than merely answering discrete queries. A beta version of Gemini Spark is planned for Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States next week, further expanding the company’s focus on integrating autonomous capabilities directly into consumer-facing products.
