Google is opening its first flagship store outside of the US
Google Store Omotesando scheduled for summer opening, marking the tech giant’s first standalone retail presence outside the United States

Google has announced plans to open its first flagship retail store outside the United States in Tokyo, Japan. The Google Store Omotesando is scheduled to open this summer, establishing the company’s first full-on standalone retail location internationally. According to the company, the decision to establish a physical presence in Tokyo mirrors the timeline of when Google opened its first international office in Japan.

The new store will allow customers to view and purchase a wide range of Google products and partner brands. Inventory will include Pixel smartphones, Nest devices, Fitbit hardware, and various accessories. In a strategic shift towards experiential retail, visitors will also be able to experience Google’s latest AI technologies and see Google services in action.

Services at the Omotesando location will extend beyond sales. The store will feature staff capable of performing on-site repairs for Pixel devices, similar to Apple’s Genius Bar model. Additional services will include setup assistance, troubleshooting, and in-store workshops for customers.

This venture marks a departure from Google’s previous retail strategy. The company previously operated 'store-within-a-store' concepts, such as Google Shops at Best Buy locations in Canada and a former location within Currys in London, UK. The UK concept has since been discontinued, and the Canadian model has not been expanded into standalone flagship stores.

Other technology giants have also experimented with physical retail networks. Microsoft opened its first stores in 2009 and expanded internationally during the 2010s, including locations in Sydney and London, before closing most of them following the pandemic. Apple has maintained a global network of physical stores, setting a precedent for hardware-focused retail experiences in the sector.
