Google lifts restrictions on Gemini for Home to serve cocktail recipes to adults
Google has updated Gemini for Home to allow adult users to request recipes for cocktails without encountering previous safety blocks, alongside improvements to alarm responsiveness and new camera footage summaries.

Google has updated Gemini for Home to remove restrictions that previously prevented the provision of recipes for age-gated beverages, such as cocktails, specifically for adult users. Under the previous configuration, the AI assistant would block these requests with an error message regardless of the user's age, citing safety safeguards originally intended to protect younger users. The company now states that adults will experience improved availability for general queries, including instructions for making drinks like margaritas on devices such as the Nest Hub.
While the update aims to align the assistant's capabilities with adult user expectations by default, Google notes that existing parental control settings or Gemini for Home response filter settings within the Google Home app may still override this new behaviour. Consequently, if Gemini still does not respond to cocktail recipe requests, users are advised to check their specific device or account configurations to ensure restrictive filters have not been enabled.
The update also introduces new mechanisms for gathering user satisfaction data on smart displays. Following most voice interactions, users will now see thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons, allowing them to indicate whether they are satisfied with Gemini's responses. Google states that these inputs will help the company identify areas for improvement in the AI assistant's performance.
In a move to enhance personalisation, Gemini can now search security footage for specific named individuals upon request. For instance, if a user has told the assistant that their nanny is named Alice, it will search for a familiar face in the security camera footage if asked if Alice has arrived home. This capability allows for more targeted monitoring and interaction with the home security system.
Further improvements focus on speed and utility for daily tasks. The update enables faster alarm setting responses, reducing wait times and the need for users to repeat their commands. Additionally, Google has introduced a "Home Brief" feature, which allows users to request a recap of events captured by their security cameras while they were away.
These changes represent a shift in how the AI assistant balances safety protocols with user convenience for adult accounts. The update ensures that general queries receive better availability while maintaining the underlying safeguards designed for younger users, provided that specific parental controls are not active on the device.
