Google I/O 2026 kicks off with focus on Gemini AI and hardware updates
Google’s 2026 I/O event opens with expectations of major Gemini model upgrades, agentic AI features, and new insights into Android XR smart glasses and Google Home speakers.

Google’s annual developer conference, Google I/O 2026, commenced on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, with a keynote livestream beginning at 10:00 AM Pacific Time. The presentation, which is expected to last approximately two hours, is being broadcast live on Google’s YouTube channel and the Google I/O website. The Verge is also providing live coverage of the event through a dedicated live blog.
The primary focus of this year’s keynote is anticipated to be updates to the Gemini AI model. Industry observers expect announcements regarding new versions of the model and the introduction of agentic AI features, a category of tools that has seen rising popularity recently with competitors such as Claude Code. These developments follow a preview of 'Gemini Intelligence' at last week’s Android Show, where Google demonstrated wider AI task automation capabilities and tools for generating custom widgets.
In addition to software updates, Google is expected to provide significant updates on its hardware ecosystem. The company is due to offer new details on Google Home speakers, which were originally announced last year. Recent leaks suggest that Walmart is launching a new Gemini-powered smart home speaker, indicating potential broader support for third-party hardware integration.
Android XR smart glasses remain a key area of interest for the conference. While prototype devices running the operating system were showcased at last year’s I/O, no consumer devices have launched to date. Speculation surrounds potential partnerships, including Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Glasses, which are rumoured to be display-free and similar in design to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.
It remains unclear whether Samsung will display its Galaxy Glasses at I/O or reserve the announcement for its July Galaxy Unpacked event. The conference continues to serve as Google’s primary platform for outlining its strategic direction in artificial intelligence and consumer technology for the coming year.
