Google integrates Reddit and forum discussions into AI Search summaries
Google has updated its AI Mode and AI Overviews to surface quotes from social media and web forums, presenting them alongside traditional results to address shifting user behaviour.

Google has modified its AI Search capabilities, specifically within AI Mode and AI Overviews, to incorporate perspectives from firsthand sources such as Reddit and other web forums. This update introduces a "preview of perspectives" feature that links search queries directly to online conversations, presenting these sources as "Expert Advice" with specific creator details. The change aims to make it easier for users to find information from sources they know and trust, moving beyond standard SEO-optimised web results.
The integration responds to observed user behaviour where individuals increasingly append "Reddit" to search terms in search of peer advice rather than relying solely on traditional results. By building these features into its AI Search tools, Google is attempting to encourage more users to adopt the new AI capabilities instead of manually filtering through conventional web pages. This shift aligns with previous observations that a significant portion of Google users end up on Reddit when searching for specific information.
Under the new system, these firsthand sources are presented under the label "Expert Advice" and include metadata such as the creator's name, handle, or community name to aid identification. For instance, a user researching photography might see quotes from a specific forum advising on exposure time, along with clickable links featuring the community name to jump to the full conversation. Google states that this approach allows users to explore specialised forums and subreddits directly within the search interface.
The update also adds contextual links to related websites and suggests related topics at the end of AI responses to enhance user exploration. These suggestions are intended to guide users toward further investigation of a subject, such as showing reports on green spaces when searching for urban expansion. Additionally, Google is adding links to useful websites beside the relevant text in AI responses, though these are not necessarily the direct answer to the query.
A further change highlights links from a user's news subscriptions within AI Mode and AI Overviews, provided the publishers support subscription linking. This feature ensures that trusted sources of information stand out more against the deluge of results. However, the specific scope of which publishers currently support this new subscription linking feature is not fully detailed beyond the statement that it applies to those that explicitly support linking a subscription.
While Google frames this as a way to address the trend of users seeking advice from others, the inclusion of social media and forum posts in AI summaries raises potential concerns regarding the verification of information. The term "Expert Advice" is used to label content from forums like Reddit, which may be misleading as these posts are often user-generated opinions rather than verified professional expertise. Furthermore, the extent to which this feature is rolled out globally versus specific regions or user accounts remains unspecified in the current information.
