Google Fitbit Air preorders come with a second band for free
The screenless tracker marks Google's first wearable release in four years, with retailer-specific incentives for early buyers.

Google has opened preorders for the Fitbit Air, a screenless fitness tracker that represents the company's first wearable release in four years. Scheduled to launch on 26 May, the device is priced at $99.99 and is designed to function with both iOS and Android operating systems. The hardware consists of a sensor-filled puck that fits into a textile or polyurethane band, relying on a companion app rather than a built-in display for data visualisation.

A key component of the preorder campaign involves incentives that vary depending on the retailer. Customers placing orders through Amazon or Best Buy will receive a complimentary second silicone band. Amazon offers a selection of colours including berry, blue, and black, though the fog green option is currently unavailable, while Best Buy automatically adds a small, black silicone band to the cart without providing options for colour or size selection.

For those purchasing directly from the Google Store, the incentive takes the form of a $35 store credit rather than a physical item. This credit is redeemable once the preorder ships, allowing the buyer to select their preferred band colour and size. It is important to note that these promotional benefits are specific to preorders and are not included in standard purchases made after the official launch date.

Regarding functionality, the Fitbit Air provides basic tracking features such as activity monitoring, sleep analysis, and heart rate and breathing rate metrics without requiring a paid subscription. However, access to advanced AI-powered features via Gemini, which aim to assist with workout improvements and recovery, requires a monthly subscription of $9.99.

To complement the hardware, a new Google Health app is expected to launch alongside the device in the coming weeks. This application is intended to provide deeper, personalised health metrics, though its exact functionality remains to be fully detailed in a formal review. Linxi News will provide further updates as more information becomes available regarding the app's integration and the device's overall performance.
