Google expands Gemini for Home with visual-driven automations and reliability fixes
The latest update to Google’s AI assistant enhances natural language processing, restores Apple Music support, and improves multi-request handling across 19 markets.

Google has rolled out a significant update to Gemini for Home, introducing AI-powered camera automations that allow smart home routines to be triggered by visual inputs. The update, which is now available to existing users in 19 countries and languages, marks a functional shift for the assistant, moving beyond simple event identification to active automation triggering based on what cameras see.
Users can now configure these routines using natural language prompts to describe specific visual events, such as a package delivery or glass breaking, and select which cameras should monitor for those triggers. This capability pairs Gemini’s visual intelligence with the broader Google Home ecosystem, enabling devices to choreograph home responses based on real-time visual data. The update excludes Enterprise and Family Link child accounts.
Beyond camera integration, Google has focused on stabilising the assistant’s core performance. The update addresses previous reliability issues, with the system now better equipped to understand and execute multiple simultaneous requests. Google has also improved the assistant’s tolerance for casual language and reduced instances where it incorrectly claims it cannot perform a task. Enhanced recognition of enabled alarms and timers is also part of the overhaul.
In a notable concession to user demand, Apple Music compatibility has been restored on Google Home devices and within the Google Home app. This resolves a long-standing limitation for subscribers who previously could not stream the service through Google’s hardware. The updated Google Home app also simplifies the process for adding ‘Familiar Faces’ and submitting feedback to the company.
The rollout comes two years after Gemini for Home replaced Google Assistant on the company’s smart home hardware in October 2025. While the software update is live, hardware availability remains a gap in Google’s strategy. The new Google Home Speaker, announced in October 2025 with a projected spring 2026 shipping date, is still not available to order.
