Google expands Gemini for Home with full-stack AI offering for hardware partners
Google is streamlining the development of AI-enabled smart home devices while pushing a premium subscription model to fund its artificial intelligence pivot.

Google has announced that Gemini for Home is now a full-stack AI offering, integrating Google Home APIs with Gemini features to accelerate the deployment of smart home technology. The company is expanding its Google Home Gemini built-in program, providing hardware manufacturers with validated, scalable reference designs that include system-on-chips, sensors, and microphones. This move is designed to allow partners to bypass the multi-year research and development phase typically required for AI-enabled hardware, enabling them to mass-produce cameras and speakers with Gemini controls more rapidly.
In a strategic push to deepen market penetration, Google is encouraging carriers, internet service providers, and security firms to integrate the Google Home Premium AI subscription service with their devices. The subscription, formerly known as Nest Aware, offers features such as Home Brief, which summarises home activity, and advanced deterrents that create simulated presence in empty homes through automations. The company aims to embed these services directly into the platforms of third-party providers, broadening the reach of its AI capabilities beyond its own branded hardware.
The pricing structure for Google Home Premium is set at a minimum of $10 per month or $100 per year for the standard tier, with an advanced option costing double that amount. Existing subscribers to Google One AI Pro, priced at $20 monthly, receive standard access, while Ultra subscribers paying $250 per month are included in the advanced tier. This tiered approach aligns with a broader industry trend where major technology firms, including Amazon and Ring, are raising subscription fees to fund their artificial intelligence pivots.
The rollout follows a redesigned Google Home app, which was released globally last year and features an "Ask Home" button for Gemini. Users who wish to continue using the legacy Google Assistant are prompted to sign up for the AI experience if they proceed with the new interface. While Google is aggressively integrating Gemini across its product suite, alternative ecosystems such as Home Assistant and Apple HomeKit remain available for consumers seeking to avoid this level of AI integration.
The timeline for when third-party manufacturers will release devices using the new reference designs has not been specified. It also remains unclear if the advanced deterrents feature will be available in all regions where Google Home Premium is offered, or the extent to which carriers and ISPs will adopt the integration of the service into their own platforms. Nevertheless, the expansion signals a significant shift in how Google intends to monetise and distribute its smart home AI capabilities.
