Google enters AI design arena with Pics at I/O 2026
Google unveils Pics, an AI-powered design application for Google Workspace, aiming to simplify visual creation for non-designers while challenging established competitors in the market.

Google has officially entered the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence design tools, announcing the launch of Pics at its I/O 2026 event on Tuesday. The new application, designed for Google Workspace, allows users to generate and edit visuals using text prompts, a move that positions the tech giant to challenge established platforms such as Canva and AI-native products like Anthropic’s Claude Design.
The application is built to be accessible to a broad audience, including teachers and small business owners, without requiring advanced design skills. Powered by the Nano Banana 2 model for generation and Gemini for the editing layer, Pics enables users to create social media graphics, invitations, and marketing materials. Google states that Nano Banana 2 was selected for its ability to support precise text rendering, real-world knowledge, and detailed visual output.
A key differentiator for Pics is its approach to image modification, addressing a common limitation in current AI generation where altering specific elements often requires rewriting entire prompts. The app integrates an editable layer that allows users to click on specific design elements to leave comments or edit directly, similar to the feedback mechanism in Google Docs. This functionality permits users to adjust details, such as changing text on a document, without altering the rest of the image.
Pics is natively integrated into Google Workspace, facilitating visual collaboration across the suite’s applications. Once a design is finalised, users can download, copy, print, or share files, and pass them to colleagues for final edits before distribution. This integration aims to streamline workflows for businesses that rely heavily on visual content, embedding AI capabilities directly into existing productivity tools.
The application is currently available to a group of testers and is scheduled to roll out to Google AI Ultra subscribers this summer. The launch forms part of a broader strategic pivot at I/O 2026, which also includes the introduction of Gemini Spark, updates to the Gemini app, and new hardware partnerships for intelligent eyewear with Samsung, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster.
