Google Docs’ web version still lacks built-in dark mode, while the feature is available in its mobile apps. Engadget describes browser-based workarounds for users who want a darker interface.

One option is Chrome’s experimental “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents” flag, which can be found through Chrome’s flags page. Engadget cautions that experimental settings could compromise browser data and device security.

The article also names Google Docs Dark Mode for Chrome and DocsAfterDark for Firefox. The Chrome extension activates dark mode and offers controls for colour theme, sepia, contrast, grayscale and brightness.

That extension automatically disables dark mode for printing, according to Engadget. The article does not establish the security of third-party extensions, whose availability and features may vary.

Google began offering dark mode in the Docs mobile app for Android in 2020 and later added it to Apple devices. Engadget reports no official explanation from Google for its absence on the web or timeframe for a built-in option.
