Google AI Overviews malfunction triggers generic chatbot responses for specific search terms
The Verge reports that Google’s AI-powered search feature is failing to generate standard summaries for certain queries, instead returning generic assistant-style messages.

Google’s AI Overviews feature is currently experiencing a malfunction that disrupts its standard search summary function. According to a report by The Verge, queries containing specific command-like terms such as “disregard,” “ignore,” and “skip” are triggering generic chatbot greetings rather than the expected AI-generated synthesis of search results.
The issue was identified by staff members at The Verge, who noted that the system’s behaviour mimics that of a traditional conversational AI assistant rather than its intended role as a search summariser. When one colleague searched for “disregard,” the AI Overview section returned messages such as “Got it! Let me know if you need help with anything else” and “No problem at all! How can I help you today?”
Further testing revealed similar anomalies for other terms. A search for “ignore” prompted the system to reply, “Message received! I’m here and ready to help. What would you like to focus on today?” Meanwhile, queries for “skip” resulted in a response suggesting the input might be a test or typo, stating, “Feel free to ask a question, share a prompt, or let me know how I can help you with your tasks today.”
The malfunction was observed shortly after Google I/O, the company’s major annual developer conference. While the incident highlights a glitch in the search algorithm, it remains unclear whether this is an isolated error or part of a broader system-wide issue. The duration of the bug is also unknown, as the report notes the problem was present as of the time of writing.
Google has not yet provided an official comment regarding the malfunction. A request for comment sent to the company did not receive an immediate reply. The report relies on anecdotal evidence from a limited number of searches and does not represent a comprehensive audit of the system’s overall performance.
