Vegas overcomes 2-0 deficit to defeat Hurricanes 5-4 in Stanley Cup Final opener

The Vegas Golden Knights have taken a 1-0 lead in the Stanley Cup Final after defeating the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in Game 1. The victory marks a significant historical anomaly, as Vegas became the first road team to stage a multi-goal comeback win in the opening game of the Final, overturning a previous record where away clubs were 0-5 in this specific scenario.

The match featured a goal in the opening two minutes of every period, a feat achieved only once before in Stanley Cup Final history during 1943. Nikolaj Ehlers opened the scoring for Carolina 25 seconds into the game, but Ivan Barbashev and Brett Howden responded quickly for Vegas. Tomas Hertl scored the winning goal at 16:36 of the third period, marking his third go-ahead goal in the third period of these playoffs, which is the highest in the league.

Defence played a pivotal role in the outcome, with Shea Theodore and Brayden McNabb each recording three points. This marked the first time a duo from the same team achieved this feat in a Stanley Cup Final Game 1. The total of 11 points accumulated by defencemen in the match tied the Stanley Cup Final record for any single game.

Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour acknowledged the pressure applied by the Golden Knights, stating that his team did not handle the pressure particularly well and made poor decisions with the puck. The Hurricanes have not lost back-to-back home games since January 1 and 3, and they are now seeking to avoid consecutive postseason losses for the first time in the current playoffs.

The teams will reconvene for Game 2 on Thursday evening in Raleigh, North Carolina. Betting markets currently list Carolina as a -167 home favourite on the money line, with the Over/Under set at 5.5 goals. Vegas is now -155 favourites to win the series, while Carolina sits at +130.
