GM brings CarPlay and Android Auto picture-in-picture to 2027 trucks
The redesigned interface for Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks will keep phone projection visible alongside GM’s native controls.
General Motors will introduce a redesigned infotainment interface on 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks later in 2026, allowing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to run in picture-in-picture cards rather than taking over the full display.
The system is designed to keep native truck functions accessible while drivers use phone-projection services. GM is also adding larger controls, updated graphics, animated transitions and revised layouts for trailering and off-roading.
Trailering information will appear in both the driver display and a home-screen card. The trucks’ built-in navigation can identify a connected trailer and use Google Maps to provide routes suited to its dimensions.
GM says the larger controls and tap zones are intended to reduce difficult or potentially dangerous tapping while driving. Key functions such as climate controls will continue to use physical buttons, although some settings and tools will move into the digital interface.
The update marks a shift from GM’s 2023 decision to drop Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from its electric vehicles. Chief executive Mary Barra later suggested the policy could extend to petrol-powered trucks and SUVs, before walking back that position.
The Verge reported that the new interface will be available only on new trucks, while existing owners will retain the previous system. GM has not provided a precise launch date, and it has not specified which trim levels or configurations will receive the update. Over-the-air updates are expected to refine the software after launch.
