While wind and solar capacity expands, the industrial machinery of oil refining continues to underpin 30 per cent of global energy use and 90 per cent of chemical feedstocks.

Despite the increasing share of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, petroleum remains the cornerstone of the global economy. Current data indicates that oil accounts for 30 per cent of worldwide energy consumption and serves as the primary source for 90 per cent of chemical feedstocks. This reliance is evident in the production of virtually all plastics, lubricants, paints, and synthetic fabrics, necessitating a vast network of industrial facilities to transform raw crude into usable products.

The transformation of crude oil into refined products relies on sophisticated chemical engineering. Crude oil is a complex mixture of thousands of hydrocarbons formed from ancient organic matter, ranging from simple molecules like propane to complex asphaltenes containing thousands of atoms. Refineries utilise atmospheric distillation to separate these fractions based on boiling points, where lighter molecules condense at the top of the column and heavier ones at the bottom. This initial step is often followed by vacuum distillation, which allows for the separation of heavy fractions without triggering premature cracking at high temperatures.

To meet the high demand for lighter fuels, refineries employ catalytic cracking to split heavy hydrocarbon molecules into lighter, more valuable ones under heat and pressure. This process is essential for converting low-value heavy fractions into gasoline and other critical products. Additional processes such as hydrotreating remove impurities like sulfur, while catalytic reforming modifies chemical structures to produce high-octane components. The distinction between crude types also plays a role, with 'sweet' crudes containing low sulfur levels and 'sour' crudes having higher concentrations, alongside variations in density between 'light' and 'heavy' oils.

The scale of these operations is staggering, with global consumption exceeding 100 million barrels of oil daily. The Chevron Richmond refinery in California exemplifies the complexity of modern facilities, processing approximately 257,000 barrels per day via atmospheric distillation and 123,000 barrels via vacuum distillation. Its capacity for catalytic cracking and reforming further highlights the advanced processing required to maximise the value of every barrel handled.

Complexity within the industry is often measured by the Nelson Complexity Index, which compares the cost and capacity of various processing units against atmospheric distillation. As of 2014, the average US refinery index stood at 8.7, with Chevron Richmond recorded at 14. However, the Jamnagar refinery in India surpasses these figures with a complexity index of 21, reflecting its status as the world's largest facility capable of refining 1.4 million barrels per day.

The sheer volume of material processed defines the economics of the sector, with refineries occupying thousands of acres and costing billions to construct. While the chemical processes themselves can be conceptually straightforward, the logistical challenge of handling such massive volumes requires an intricate arrangement of storage tanks, processing units, and separation columns. This industrial infrastructure ensures that the modern world continues to run on petroleum, supporting energy needs and chemical manufacturing on a global scale.
