As India prepares for a one-off Test match against Afghanistan, attention has turned to Shubman Gill’s leadership record across all formats. The 26-year-old assumed the Indian Test captaincy during the 2025 tour of England, stepping into the void left by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who had stepped away from the longest format.

Gill’s tenure in Tests has been defined by resilience. He led India to a 2-2 series draw against England, securing a historic victory at The Oval in the fifth Test. This result marked India’s third-ever win at the venue. Prior to that, he secured his first Test win as captain at home, guiding India to a dominant innings and 140-run victory against the West Indies to seal the series.

In One Day Internationals, Gill’s record has faced challenges. He led India to a 2-1 series loss against Australia in October 2025. Following that, he returned from injury to captain the side against New Zealand in January 2026, but India suffered another 2-1 defeat. During the interim South Africa series, KL Rahul served as stand-in captain.

Gill’s experience in T20 Internationals offers a contrasting narrative. During the 2024 series against Zimbabwe, he captained India in five matches, winning four and losing only one. This strong start in the shortest format demonstrated his ability to manage high-pressure scenarios early in his captaincy career.

On the franchise front, Gill has taken over the Gujarat Titans from Hardik Pandya for the IPL 2024 season. Over 40 matches across the 2024, 2025, and 2026 seasons, he has guided the team to 23 wins, 15 losses, and two no-results. His leadership has resulted in playoff appearances in both 2025 and 2026, maintaining the franchise’s competitive edge in the league.
