Indian batting order reshuffle signals shift in international hierarchy

The International Cricket Council has released its latest One Day International batting rankings, confirming a significant shift in the Indian batting order. Shubman Gill has ascended to second place, overtaking teammate Virat Kohli, who has fallen to third position in the updated standings.

Gill’s rise to the number two spot follows his decisive contribution to India’s 3-0 series victory over Afghanistan. The right-handed batsman scored 84 runs in the opening match and followed up with a century of 154 in the second encounter. His performances earned him the Player of the Series award and secured a three-place jump in the global rankings.

Kohli’s drop in the standings coincides with his absence from the Afghanistan series. The former captain sustained a right hamstring injury during the Indian Premier League 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans. His absence from the international fixture provided the opportunity for Gill to move ahead of him in the rankings.

India captain Rohit Sharma remains in fourth place in the current rankings. Sharma contributed 143 runs in the Afghanistan series at a strike rate exceeding 115, including scores of 48 and 79 in the final two matches. Despite his strong performance, he has not moved up the chart in this update.

New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell retains the top position in the ICC ODI batting rankings with 815 points. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Ibrahim Zadran has slipped in the rankings following a disappointing performance against India.

Both Gill and Kohli are expected to return to the squad for India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against England in July 2026. The tour includes matches at Edgbaston on 14 July, Sophia Gardens on 16 July, and Lord’s on 19 July.
