Giants’ Thibodeaux backs Wilson as top defensive backs coach ahead of 2026 season
Wilson, who reunited with head coach John Harbaugh after stints with the Baltimore Ravens and Tennessee Titans, has implemented a defensive philosophy he describes as “violent” and “unapologetic.”

New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux has issued a pointed endorsement of first-year defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, asking the coach directly if he considers himself the best defensive backs coach in the league. During a recent media session, Thibodeaux confirmed that Wilson affirmed his status, a claim Thibodeaux supports by pointing to the high-level performance of the secondary during Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and minicamp.
“I asked him today does he think he's the best DB coach in the league? Of course, he said yeah,” Thibodeaux told reporters. “I asked him that because our DBs have been playing at a high level. I saw this same defense before. So now seeing these guys play at a pace that is unbelievable, it's no question of how great of a coach he is.”
Wilson was hired by head coach John Harbaugh in January 2026, marking a reunion between the two coaches who previously worked together with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023. Before joining the Giants, Wilson spent two seasons running the defence for the Tennessee Titans. Thibodeaux noted his familiarity with the scheme from his previous exposure to Wilson’s system in Baltimore, suggesting a seamless tactical transition for the roster.
The defensive coordinator has set a clear tone for the upcoming season, describing the team’s approach as a “New York brand of football.” Wilson characterised the style as “violent,” “unapologetic,” and “unpredictable,” aiming to leverage the unit’s physicality and complexity. The early returns from training camp appear to validate this direction, at least from the perspective of the edge rushers.
Thibodeaux enters the 2026 season on his fifth-year option, which carries a value of over $14 million. He will be joined by fellow edge rushers Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Arvell Reese, forming one of the deepest front ends in the league. Wilson now has the pass-rush talent to complement the secondary’s developing cohesion, positioning the Giants with significant defensive depth as they head into the regular season.
The comments were captured via a tweet from the account @SleeperGiants on 23 June 2026, highlighting the growing confidence within the organisation as they prepare for the 2026 campaign.
