Giants pivot Arvell Reese to inside linebacker to manage roster congestion

The New York Giants are reportedly advancing plans to transition newly drafted defensive end Arvell Reese into an inside linebacker role for the 2026 season. The potential positional shift follows the team’s selection of the former Ohio State player with the fifth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, a move that occurred after Reese fell past the New York Jets at number two and an unspecified team at number three.
NFL insider James Palmer reports that the coaching staff has been impressed by Reese’s performance during mini-camp, noting his agility, coverage capabilities, and high football intelligence. Palmer indicated that the Giants are serious about the change, with Reese demonstrating light feet and assignment reliability that suggested a viable future in the middle of the field rather than on the edge.
The strategic rationale for the move centres on alleviating significant congestion within the outside linebacker corps. The Giants already possess a deep group of pass rushers, including Brian Burns, 2025 first-round selection Abdul Carter, and 2022 first-round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux. By utilising Reese at inside linebacker, the team aims to keep its most talented defensive players on the field simultaneously, preventing offenses from running plays away from him as they might against an edge rusher.
Reese’s collegiate statistics at Ohio State, which included 10 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks, initially led many observers to expect him to remain an edge rusher. However, the internal evaluation during mini-camp has highlighted his versatility. Palmer noted that Reese’s ability to drop into coverage and blitz effectively from the inside allows the defence to maintain its structural integrity while maximising his athletic impact.
While the summer will ultimately determine the final configuration of the roster, the current trajectory suggests a permanent or semi-permanent shift. The organisation appears focused on integrating Reese into a middle alignment to enhance run defence and coverage options, ensuring that the depth chart does not force difficult decisions regarding the deployment of its high-value draft assets.
