The San Francisco Giants have confirmed that third baseman Matt Chapman will undergo surgery on Tuesday, August 10, 2026, for an abdominal strain sustained on June 30. The procedure marks the official end of Chapman’s 2026 season, adding to a growing list of roster disruptions for the club.
Chapman, 33, suffered the injury in the sixth inning of an 8-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks. A specialist examined him on Monday in Philadelphia and confirmed the core muscle damage, according to a team announcement. He joins Harrison Bader, Casey Schmitt, and Trevor McDonald on the injured list with season-ending injuries.
In his 84 games this season, Chapman recorded 72 hits, seven home runs, 42 RBI, and 35 runs, finishing with a .235 batting average. The third baseman is in his 10th Major League Baseball season and signed a six-year, $151 million contract extension with the Giants in 2024. He is owed $25.1 million per year through 2030.
The Giants’ injury report extended beyond Chapman on Monday. Catcher Daniel Susac was placed on the 10-day injured list following a left knee patella fracture. An MRI conducted on August 10 confirmed the injury, and Susac was scheduled to meet with doctors to determine his prognosis.
