Athens Regional victory secured with 6-1 win over Liberty Flames; key players suspended for next round

The Georgia Bulldogs have secured their place in the NCAA baseball Super Regionals, defeating the Liberty Flames 6-1 at Foley Field in Athens. The victory marks the program’s second appearance in the Super Regionals in three years, though the celebration was tempered by immediate disciplinary consequences for key personnel.

The game’s momentum shifted in the sixth inning when Tre Phelps hit a go-ahead home run off Liberty starter Cooper Harrington. However, Phelps was ejected by umpires for gesturing toward the Liberty dugout, a move that will cause him to miss the first game of the upcoming Super Regional series. Head coach Wes Johnson was also ejected during the same incident.

Johnson clarified that Phelps was waving to his parents, who were seated behind the opposing dugout, but umpires interpreted the gesture as directed at the team. Liberty’s Bradley LeCroy confirmed that Phelps made remarks to the dugout but stated he could not specify the content due to the noise level of the 3,633 attendees. The NCAA has declined to make a statement regarding the ejections.

On the mound, starting pitcher Caden Aoki delivered a career-high 11 strikeouts over six innings, allowing only one hit. Johnson praised the team’s resilience against Harrington, who utilised a unique lower release height to keep Georgia’s hitters off balance for the first six innings.

Georgia added four insurance runs in the eighth inning to seal the victory, including a solo home run by Michael O-Shaugnessy, an RBI double by Rylan Lujo, and a two-run single by Ryan Wynn. Zach Brown pitched three scoreless innings to close out the game.

The Bulldogs are expected to host the Super Regional next weekend, with Mississippi State a likely opponent if they win the Starkville regional. Georgia has defeated Mississippi State four times this season.
