Gates to join Seattle Kraken ownership group pending NHL approval
One Roof Sports and Entertainment announced the prospective investment on Monday, citing shared commitments to the region’s future as the organisation pursues an NBA expansion bid.

Philanthropist Melinda French Gates is set to become a minority investor in the Seattle Kraken’s ownership group, subject to final approval from the National Hockey League (NHL). One Roof Sports and Entertainment confirmed the development in a release on Monday, marking a significant shift in the composition of the franchise’s leadership structure.
The announcement underscores a strategic alignment between French Gates and One Roof’s majority owner and managing partner, Samantha Holloway. According to the release, both parties share a commitment to civic engagement in Seattle and a dedication to investing in the region’s future. French Gates brings a substantial background in social advocacy to the table, having founded Pivotal Ventures, which focuses on social progress for women and girls, and serving as co-chair of the Gates Foundation.
French Gates expressed a desire to move beyond her role as a spectator. “I’m a big believer in the power of sports, and after many years of cheering on Seattle from the sidelines, I’m excited to have an even deeper connection to the Seattle sports community,” she said. The investment represents a formalisation of her long-standing support for the team, transitioning her involvement from external philanthropy to direct ownership participation.
One Roof Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena, is currently navigating a broader expansion strategy. French Gates joins the ownership group as the organisation pursues an expansion bid for an NBA team in Seattle, should the league move forward with such plans. This dual focus on existing NHL operations and potential NBA expansion signals a long-term commitment to professional sports in the Pacific Northwest.
The transaction remains contingent upon regulatory clearance. While One Roof has formalised the intent to bring French Gates into the fold, the deal is not yet finalised and requires explicit consent from the NHL. The league’s approval process will determine the timeline for the investment to take effect and the extent of French Gates’ influence within the ownership group.
