Gasly takes first F1 pole at Monza as Alpine secures landmark result
Pierre Gasly will start the Italian Grand Prix from pole after setting a 1:21.786 lap, with George Russell second and Oscar Piastri provisionally third.
Pierre Gasly claimed his first Formula 1 pole position at Monza, giving Alpine its first pole and the Enstone team its first since 2009.
Gasly set a final qualifying time of 1:21.786 in his 190th F1 race, beating Mercedes driver George Russell by 0.060 seconds. Russell had held provisional pole before the final runs.
Oscar Piastri was provisionally third for McLaren, but his position remained subject to a stewards’ investigation into alleged blocking of Red Bull’s Liam Lawson. Piastri also locked up at the start of his final qualifying lap.
The result has added significance for Gasly at Monza, where he won the Italian Grand Prix in 2020 while driving for AlphaTauri.
Charles Leclerc qualified fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth for Ferrari, while Lando Norris was ninth. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh but is due to start from the back row because of engine changes.
Sky Sports reported that Antonelli assisted Russell with a tow during qualifying. The Italian Grand Prix is scheduled to follow on Sunday.
