Gasly beats Russell to Monza pole as Antonelli faces back-row start

Alpine’s Pierre Gasly will start the Italian Grand Prix from pole after beating Mercedes’ George Russell by 0.060 seconds in qualifying at Monza, according to BBC Sport.
Gasly’s result carries added significance at a circuit where he claimed his only Formula 1 victory in 2020, while driving for Red Bull’s junior team.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri qualified third, ahead of Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was sixth.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh for Mercedes but is set to start from the back after receiving a grid penalty for using a new engine.
McLaren’s Lando Norris qualified ninth after what BBC Sport described as a messy session. Russell had led final practice, ahead of Hamilton and Verstappen.
