Gaikwad cites simplicity as key leadership lesson from Dhoni amid CSK rebuild
Ruturaj Gaikwad tells Sportstar that avoiding overthinking is the primary trait absorbed from MS Dhoni, as the franchise seeks to recover from a historic low in IPL 2025.

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has identified simplicity and the avoidance of overthinking as the most critical leadership lessons derived from his tenure alongside former captain MS Dhoni. Speaking to Sportstar, the 29-year-old outlined how observing Dhoni’s calm methodology provided a framework for clear decision-making, a quality that defined the former India skipper’s decade-long reign at the helm of the franchise.
Gaikwad assumed the captaincy ahead of the IPL 2024 season, inheriting a role synonymous with sustained success. He noted that Dhoni’s approach allowed for uncluttered conclusions, a process validated by consistent results over many years. The current skipper explained that while he values this clarity, he must balance it with his own instincts to lead effectively, rather than simply replicating his predecessor’s style.
The CSK captain acknowledged the tendency for players in responsible positions to overthink decisions, weighing every potential outcome. In contrast, Dhoni’s method involved letting situations flow naturally to arrive at a conclusion. Gaikwad emphasised that this simplicity was not merely a tactical preference but a disciplined approach that stood up under pressure, providing a stable foundation for team management.
However, Gaikwad stressed that captaincy requires individual agency. He referenced advice from Dhoni, who encouraged him to lead in his own style rather than copy specific methods. The former captain highlighted that cricket captains must ultimately make on-field decisions, necessitating a blend of inherited wisdom and personal thought processes to implement winning plans.
These reflections come as CSK navigates a significant period of rebuilding. The franchise missed the playoffs in Gaikwad’s first two seasons and endured a particularly difficult IPL 2025 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the standings. This result marked one of the worst seasons in the club’s history, prompting a reevaluation of strategies as the team looks to return to the summit of the Indian Premier League.
Gaikwad’s comments underscore the challenge of transitioning from a legacy of dominance to a period of reconstruction. By anchoring his approach in the simplicity advocated by Dhoni while integrating his own analytical perspective, the captain aims to stabilise the team. The focus now shifts to implementing these philosophical lessons into tangible on-field results to reverse the recent downward trajectory.
