AEW Double or Nothing: FTR never stopped believing tag-team wrestling could matter again
Double or Nothing bout marks permanent end of the Copeland and Cage partnership

FTR, comprising Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler, are set to defend their AEW World Tag Team Championships against Adam Copeland and Christian Cage at the Double or Nothing event on Sunday night. The contest is stipulated as an “I Quit” match and will result in the permanent dissolution of the Copeland and Cage tag team partnership.

FTR, who have held the AEW titles on three occasions, regard the bout as a critical opportunity to solidify their legacy. The team, formerly known as The Revival in WWE’s NXT, has competed across multiple promotions including New Japan Pro Wrestling, AAA, and Ring of Honor before joining All Elite Wrestling in 2020. They view this match as a step to prove they are the greatest tag team of any generation, surpassing previous eras.

The history between the two factions is complex, having previously competed as a trios unit known as Rated FTR, which included Copeland, in a challenge for the AEW Trios Championships. The partnership fractured following a series of conflicts that saw Copeland align with Christian Cage, who is described as a multiple-time World Heavyweight and Tag Team Champion and the greatest tag team of his generation.

FTR credits AEW President Tony Khan for enabling long-form tag-team matches and high-stakes stipulations, citing a 58-minute bout with Bullet Club Gold and a dog-collar match against the Briscoes as evidence of the promotion’s commitment to the division. The duo claims they helped revive the global tag-team division, contrasting their dedication with the limited options available to Copeland and Cage in their era, which included teams such as the Hardy Boyz and the Dudley Boyz.

Looking beyond this weekend, FTR has expressed interest in facing The New Day (Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods) in AEW. Wheeler noted that the promotion’s environment allows for fewer restrictions than their previous experiences in WWE, suggesting that such a matchup would showcase the depth of the current tag-team landscape.
