French Open quarterfinals: Sinner and Djokovic exits reshape tournament landscape
World number one Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic have been eliminated in the men's singles, leaving Alexander Zverev as the favourite in a chaotic draw.

The 2026 French Open has reached the quarterfinals with significant upsets in the men's singles, including the exits of world number one Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic. Only three top-five seeds have advanced to the quarterfinals across both brackets, marking one of the most open Grand Slam tournaments in recent memory. Quarterfinal matches are scheduled to begin on Tuesday.
In the men's draw, Sinner was eliminated in the second round by Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Sinner had led 5-1 in the third set before collapsing due to extreme heat, losing 18 of the last 20 games in a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 defeat. This marks the first time a men's number one seed has exited in the second round or earlier since Andre Agassi.
Novak Djokovic was eliminated in the third round by Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca. Fonseca rallied from two sets down to win 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in a match lasting four hours and 53 minutes. The victory ended Djokovic's quest for a record 25th Grand Slam title and marks Fonseca's first appearance in the last 16 at a major.
Alexander Zverev is now the clear favourite in the men's draw. He is scheduled to face Jodar in the quarterfinals, having only gone to a fourth set once in the tournament so far. Zverev’s path to the semi-finals would then see him face the winner of the match between Fonseca and Jakub Mensik.
In the women's draw, Aryna Sabalenka is the clear favourite. She is set to play Shnaider in the quarterfinals, with a potential semi-final match against the winner of Kalinskaya vs Chwalinska. Betting odds list Sabalenka at -135, while Andreeva is listed at +500. Fonseca is listed at +370 as a second-chance best bet in the men's bracket.
