The Freedom 250 Grand Prix is scheduled to take place in Washington, D.C. on 23 August 2026, marking the first time the NTT IndyCar Series has raced in the United States’ capital. The event is positioned as a centrepiece for the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations, with the 250-mile, 147-lap circuit designed to traverse high-visibility locations within the city.

According to Fox Sports, President Donald Trump attended a Freedom 250 Grand Prix Showcase on 13 July, where he described the upcoming event as "like no other race, ever." Trump linked the modern motorsport spectacle to a historical precedent set by President Thomas Jefferson, who hosted horse races and festivities near the White House in 1801 to mark America’s 25th birthday.

The course for the Freedom 250 will run along Pennsylvania Avenue and Constitution Avenue, passing in front of the Washington Monument. While the track does not extend to the White House itself, it operates in close proximity to the executive residence. This makes the Grand Prix the second major sporting event hosted near the White House this summer, following the UFC Freedom 250.

In the lead-up to the race, IndyCar drivers and executives conducted a promotional tour of the capital on 20 August, visiting both the White House and the U.S. Capitol. The visit served to underscore the institutional significance of the event, which is intended to cap off the 250th anniversary year.

On the sporting front, Alex Palou enters the race as the championship leader with 542 points, despite finishing fourth in the previous round at Markham. The battle for second place remains tightly contested, with Kyle Kirkwood on 409 points, David Malukas on 405 points, and Christian Lundgaard on 403 points.

Because this is the inaugural IndyCar race in Washington, D.C., no drivers possess prior experience of the specific street circuit. The FOX pre-race show is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. ET, with the green flag scheduled for 1:13 p.m. ET on Sunday.
