Framework delays its first Laptop 13 Pro shipments by a month
Modular PC maker cites trackpad grounding and display firmware issues for one-month slip

Framework has announced a delay of approximately one month for the initial shipments of its new Laptop 13 Pro, shifting the expected delivery window from late June to late July. According to a customer email obtained by The Verge, some units may slip into early August, with subsequent batches potentially delayed until early September. The postponement affects full laptop pre-orders, while mainboard-only pre-orders featuring the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor remain scheduled for June shipment.

The delay stems from two specific hardware issues identified during the mass production ramp: an electrical grounding problem in the circuit board design of the new haptic trackpad and a firmware bug in the custom display. Framework stated it is holding production to ensure a new printed circuit board design is used for all haptic trackpads, a solution developed in collaboration with suppliers Lite-On and Boréas. The previous design caused the trackpad to reset after repeated clicks, an issue that persisted despite dozens of internal firmware releases aimed at refining haptic feel and force uniformity.

In parallel, the company is working with display supplier CSOT to address an initialization bug found in the custom panel. CSOT has developed updated firmware to resolve the issue, which is expected to enter production around the same time as the new trackpad modules. While the updated display firmware is not expected to impact the overall laptop schedule, shipments of the standalone display module have been moved to July.

Framework has offered full refunds for pre-order deposits to customers for whom the new timeline is unsuitable. The company noted that press reviews for the full Laptop 13 Pro system are also delayed until July, meaning reviewers will not have full systems to test in June. Consequently, customers who pre-ordered the mainboard will need to rely on existing hands-on write-ups and general processor reviews to evaluate performance metrics.

To address feedback regarding memory availability, Framework has allowed mainboard pre-order customers to add LPCAMM2 memory to their orders. However, the company warned that adding memory to a June batch order may cause a slight delay. The firm emphasised that the delay was a deliberate decision to ensure the flagship product is robust and reliable, prioritising quality over strict adherence to initial timelines.
