Four iconic video games inducted into World Video Game Hall of Fame
The 2026 class marks the 49th addition to the hall, recognising titles that defined genres from psychological horror to modern role-playing games
The Strong National Museum of Play has announced the inductees for the 2026 World Video Game Hall of Fame. The new class comprises four titles: Angry Birds, FIFA International Soccer, Silent Hill, and Dragon Quest. These selections join 49 other influential games already housed within the museum's permanent collection.
The induction highlights a diverse range of gaming history, spanning nearly four decades. Angry Birds, which debuted in 2009, is recognised for establishing a decade-long franchise built on simple yet engaging catapult mechanics. Its inclusion follows a trajectory of success that saw Rovio's feathered characters become a global phenomenon.
Silent Hill and Dragon Quest also secure their places in the hall, representing significant milestones in genre definition. Launched in 1999, Silent Hill pioneered the psychological horror genre and spawned a long-running franchise. Dragon Quest, released in 1986, is credited with helping to define the template for modern role-playing games.
FIFA International Soccer, released in 1993, is noted as the genesis of the EA Sports FIFA series. While Electronic Arts no longer holds the official FIFA licensing rights, the title remains the origin point for what is considered the world's largest sports game franchise.
The museum noted that the selection process considered several other notable titles for this year's shortlist. Candidates included Frogger, Galaga, League of Legends, Mega Man, PaRappa the Rapper, RuneScape, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and Tokimeki Memorial.
This year's inductees follow previous additions such as GoldenEye 007, Quake, Defender, and Tamagotchi. The announcement from The Strong National Museum of Play underscores the enduring cultural impact of these specific software titles on the industry.
