Former Red Sox manager Joe Morgan dies aged 95
Morgan led Boston to American League East titles in 1988 and 1990, including the celebrated “Morgan Magic” season.
Former Boston Red Sox manager Joe Morgan has died aged 95, the team announced on 6 September 2026.
Morgan managed Boston for three and a half seasons after taking over partway through the 1988 campaign. He led the team to an 89–73 record and the American League East title.
Boston won 12 consecutive games after the 1988 All-Star break, a run that became known as “Morgan Magic”. Morgan managed the Red Sox to another division title in 1990.
His association with Boston stretched across nearly two decades. He managed the organisation’s Triple-A affiliate from 1974 to 1982 before working as a scout and coach, and was a bullpen coach during the Red Sox’s 1986 American League pennant season.
According to the team, Red Sox officials saw echoes of the 1988 season in the 2026 team’s response to adversity. Morgan is survived by four children, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
