Former Fitbit executive launches UV-tracking smart necklace
Stacy Salvi’s new wearable syncs with an app to provide personalised skin profiles and sunscreen guidance, priced at $200 for early adopters.

The90, a company established by former Fitbit executive Stacy Salvi, has launched The Gem, a smart pendant necklace engineered to track real-time UVA and UVB exposure. The device utilises integrated sensors to measure sunlight levels, with data that updates dynamically as the wearer moves between direct sunlight and shaded environments, such as sitting near a window.
The Gem synchronises with a companion application that generates personalised skin profiles based on the collected data. This software component offers actionable guidance, including specific reminders for sunscreen application and defined windows for safe sunlight exposure, tailored to the individual’s UV thresholds.
Salvi brings eight years of experience from Fitbit to the venture, having served both before and after the company’s acquisition by Google in 2021. The90 positions The Gem as a distinct form factor within the wearable technology sector, differentiating it from existing UV tracking solutions developed by other entities, including startups like Shade and established beauty corporations such as L'Oreal.
While the company describes the device as a new category of wearable, the underlying technology for UV monitoring is not novel. The Gem’s primary innovation lies in its presentation as a pendant necklace, aiming to provide a relatively accurate assessment of exposure regardless of whether the user is walking outdoors or remaining indoors.
The Gem is available for purchase directly from The90 at a limited-time early adopter price of $200. The standard retail price for the device is set at $300.
