A long-time cloud computing evangelist has accelerated plans to migrate off Amazon Web Services following a suspension triggered by a security alert during routine testing.

A former Amazon Web Services evangelist and early adopter has confirmed they are moving their remaining digital assets off the cloud provider after a security alert suspended their account. The individual, who organised the first AWS event in Melbourne during the platform's infancy, had retained only essential services including Route53 for domains, S3 for backups, and AWS Workmail for business communication.

The suspension occurred after the user returned to the dormant account to benchmark code on a high-specification EC2 instance featuring 192 cores and 1TB of RAM, alongside testing AWS Bedrock. Approximately three hours into this activity, the account was flagged for a suspected security breach. The resulting restriction disabled the AWS Workmail service, which serves as the user's primary business email system, preventing any outgoing or incoming correspondence.

Despite following standard support instructions to change passwords and revoke access tokens, the account remains restricted four days after the incident. The user has exhausted standard support channels, including email, forums, and chat sessions, without achieving a resolution. Premium support is not an option for the individual, leaving them unable to create new resources or access their business email.

This incident has served as the catalyst for the user to accelerate plans to migrate their domains from Route53 and backups from S3. The decision to leave the platform entirely is compounded by the fact that AWS Workmail has already notified users of an impending shutdown within 12 months. The user views this suspension as the final straw in a long-term relationship with the provider that began to deteriorate through accumulated minor issues over the last 15 years.

The user previously tested AWS Bedrock for privacy reasons but noted it was significantly more expensive than a direct Anthropic subscription. While the security alarm triggered by the sudden high-resource activity is understood as a necessary protective measure, the inability to resolve the suspension quickly has eroded trust. The user expressed relief at having moved off the platform years ago, lamenting that a return visit has inadvertently brought down the email system they had foolishly left behind.
