Ford to Embed Apple Maps in Next-Generation Electric Vehicles
The integration of Apple’s MapKit for Automotive SDK aims to enhance BlueCruise hands-free driving capabilities, with the first affordable model launching in 2027.
Ford has confirmed that Apple Maps will serve as the official navigation system for its upcoming electric vehicles, marking a significant step in the manufacturer’s strategic expansion into the EV market. The integration is built directly into Ford’s Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform, utilising Apple’s newly launched MapKit for Automotive SDK to simplify the embedding of mapping services into vehicle infotainment systems.
This partnership represents the first collaboration involving Apple that supports self-driving capabilities. By providing road-level data and real-time traffic information, Apple Maps will feed directly into Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system. Ford stated that this data exchange is designed to improve the on-ramp-to-off-ramp experience, offering a more seamless transition for drivers utilising the semi-autonomous features.
The UEV platform will underpin a range of affordable electric vehicles, beginning with a midsize pickup truck scheduled for launch in 2027. Ford has indicated that this initial model will be priced at approximately $30,000. The company has further promised that its future EV lineup will be priced lower than a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y, responding to strong market demand for budget-friendly electric transport.
Drivers can expect Apple Maps to deliver natural language directions, real-time accident reports, and various routing options directly to the vehicle’s displays. Apple described the integration as a way to deliver a "beautiful and easy-to-use navigation experience," while Ford has been selective about revealing details regarding the specific features of vehicles that will follow the initial 2027 pickup truck.
While Ford has released promotional material suggesting a broader lineup that includes SUVs and sedans, the exact specifications for models beyond the first truck remain unclear. The company has been cautious about outlining the precise timeline for the full rollout of the UEV platform, though the focus remains firmly on establishing a cost-effective entry point into the electric vehicle sector.
