Focal launches $3,600 Mu-So Hekla soundbar to replace multi-speaker home cinema setups
While the unit faces physical constraints regarding depth and handling, testing suggests it offers superior clarity on complex tracks compared to rival systems from Sonos and Cambridge Audio.

Focal has introduced the Mu-So Hekla, a premium soundbar priced at $3,600 that is designed to replace traditional multi-speaker surround-sound setups. The device weighs 34 pounds and is powered by 660 watts distributed across 15 drivers, supporting Dolby Atmos for immersive audio in movies, music, and gaming. Despite a high price point and minor physical drawbacks, the unit has been identified as a top choice for users with limited space seeking a standalone Atmos experience.
Comparative testing against the Cambridge Audio Evo One and Sonos Arc Ultra revealed that the Mu-So Hekla demonstrated superior clarity on specific complex tracks, such as Ex-Vöid's "So Neurotic". The soundbar also provided a convincing concert-like experience when playing Fleetwood Mac's *Rumours* in Dolby Atmos, with vocals appearing stage left and drums positioned in the back of the room. For cinematic content, the device successfully simulated side and rear channels using up-firing drivers, creating an immersive effect for titles like *Cold Storage* and *Avatar: Fire and Ash*.
Physical constraints associated with the unit include a depth of 11.5 inches, which may require elevating a TV stand to accommodate the device. Reviewers also noted sharp edges on the metal heat sink, which can be difficult to grip when lifting the heavy unit. The soundbar lacks a dedicated remote control, relying instead on the connected television's remote or the Focal app for operation.
In terms of connectivity and streaming, the device features one HDMI port for an eARC connection to a television, alongside an optical-in, an Ethernet port for wired streaming, and RCA jacks to connect a subwoofer. For high-resolution audio, the Mu-So Hekla supports Tidal exclusively via the Focal app when using Tidal Connect. The internal architecture includes three woofers, two tweeters, two midrange units, and eight additional drivers to handle deep bass and warm guitar reproduction.
Availability for the Mu-So Hekla is currently restricted to Focal dealers, though phone ordering may be possible. The manufacturer recommends that potential buyers visit a local showroom to listen to the system before purchasing. While the device is capable of replacing a wired speaker setup using an AV receiver in space-constrained environments, a full multiple-speaker setup remains more akin to a traditional movie theatre experience.
