Houston Cougars guard Kingston Flemings is projected as the eighth overall selection in the upcoming NBA Draft, with recent mock drafts from CBS Sports placing him with the Atlanta Hawks. The 19-year-old is distinguished by a high basketball IQ and a cerebral playstyle that prioritises decision-making and team facilitation over individual scoring statistics.
During his freshman season at Houston, Flemings averaged 16.1 points, 5.2 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 31.7 minutes per game. Coaches and peers describe him as a mature prospect capable of adapting to the professional game, noting his explosive athleticism alongside his ability to manipulate defenders and create clean looks for teammates.
Flemings has been refining his offensive repertoire ahead of the draft, specifically working on his pull-up three-point shooting and adding a floater to his game. He cited Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey as a model for continual improvement, noting Maxey’s successful transition from a low college three-point percentage to the NBA. In recent workouts, Flemings made two of three floater attempts, a shot he previously focused on less during his collegiate career.
The guard’s basketball acumen extends beyond his physical skills. He has correctly predicted the rise of several NBA franchises, including the Detroit Pistons, Washington Wizards, and Utah Jazz, based on their young cores and frontcourt talent. This analytical approach has led to comparisons with broadcast analysts, with former high school coach Koty Cowgill suggesting Flemings could perform at an elite level in that role.
Flemings also demonstrated his attention to detail during a pre-draft media availability in Manhattan, where he corrected a reporter’s misstatement regarding CJ McCollum’s alma mater. Following advice from Houston coach Kelvin Sampson to adjust his playstyle after a losing streak, Flemings recorded eight assists against Colorado by taking what the defence gave him, a shift that contributed to a five-game winning streak for the Cougars.
