2026 Memorial Tournament leaderboard: Tommy Fleetwood in front early as Rory McIlroy bounces back
PGA Tour signature event sees top contenders navigate demanding Muirfield Village conditions

Tommy Fleetwood shares the early lead at the 2026 Memorial Tournament after the first round, finishing at five under par alongside Wyndham Clark, J.J. Spaun, and Ryan Gerard. The quartet navigated a demanding opening day at Muirfield Village, where the course played more than a full stroke over par, testing the precision and patience of the field.

Fleetwood remained bogey-free despite hitting only seven greens in regulation, topping the field in strokes gained around the green with 11 out of 11 up-and-downs. The Englishman, who had experienced a dip in form over recent months, managed his game effectively to return to the top of the leaderboard. Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, played in his first signature event since winning the CJ Cup Byron Nelson earlier this season, citing the difficulty of the rough and the necessity of patience.

Defending champion Scottie Scheffler shot a two-under 73, finding water on the par-3 16th and hitting just seven greens in regulation. Masters champion Rory McIlroy recovered from a double bogey on the third hole to finish at one under par, emphasizing the importance of maintaining perspective over the course of the tournament.

Justin Rose, who recently changed equipment following poor showings at the Doral and Quail Hollow Club, found 15 greens in regulation and finished at three under par. His resurgence with his scoring clubs follows a top-10 finish at the PGA Championship. Xander Schauffele shot even par and remains five strokes off the pace, while Ryan Gerard, who contended at last week’s Colonial, also joined the leaders.

Alex Smalley recorded an 11-over 83, described as the worst round of his career and the third-worst of any player on the PGA Tour this season relative to strokes gained. Smalley, who had finished on the podium in three of his last five tournaments, was shut out in birdies and recorded more sixes than threes in his round.

J.J. Spaun continued his stellar form from last week’s Charles Schwab Challenge, where he contended, while Gerard made five straight birdies at one point in his back nine. The players noted the firm and fair conditions, with Gerard suggesting that the difficulty could increase significantly by Saturday.
