Clark proud of 3-point breakthrough in OT loss
Indiana’s 1-2 record persists as Washington’s youthful roster overcomes star power

The Indiana Fever’s narrow 104-102 overtime defeat to the Washington Mystics on Friday night underscored a persistent structural issue within the franchise: an inability to maintain defensive consistency despite offensive brilliance. While star guard Caitlin Clark delivered a pivotal performance to force extra time, the team’s record remained at 1-2, marking the second occasion in three games that Indiana has surrendered more than 100 points.

Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, finished with 32 points, eight assists, and four rebounds. Her shooting efficiency from beyond the arc improved significantly to 7-for-17, a marked correction from the opening two games where she made only three of 16 attempts. The breakthrough culminated with 3.1 seconds remaining in regulation, when Clark connected on a score-tying three-pointer to send the contest into overtime.

Despite the late surge, the Fever’s defensive metrics remained a point of concern. Clark acknowledged the team’s tendency to allow offensive success to dictate defensive effort. "We've been letting [making shots] dictate how well we played defense too much," Clark stated. "When things aren't going well, we've still got to be able to defend and find ways to get stops, and we haven't done that very well to this point."

Head coach Stephanie White echoed these sentiments, highlighting the imbalance between offensive expectations and defensive output. "We put a lot of pressure on our offense to be perfect when we don't consistently defend," White said. The Mystics, noted as the youngest team in the WNBA with a 2-1 record, capitalized on this inconsistency throughout the contest.

Washington’s victory was driven by a collective effort from its rookie contingent. Sonia Citron led the charge with a career-high 30 points, six rebounds, and four assists. She was supported by Kiki Iriafen, who recorded 25 points and 13 rebounds, and Shakira Austin, who contributed 19 points. Additionally, Cotie McMahon made her debut with 13 points after recovering from a left elbow sprain, providing further depth to the Mystics’ roster.

For Indiana, the loss highlights the challenges of integrating high-profile talent with cohesive team defence. Clark admitted that her initial hesitation from three-point range in the season’s opening games affected her mindset, but she expressed pride in her ability to recover during the fourth quarter. The Fever will need to address their defensive fragility if they hope to improve their standing in the competitive Western Conference.
