In-season tournament stakes rise as Indiana seeks to defend Commissioner's Cup title against Liberty’s winning streak

The Indiana Fever travel to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, June 6, to face the New York Liberty in what marks the first regular-season meeting between the two franchises in 2026. The WNBA regular-season match forms part of the Commissioner's Cup in-season tournament, with the game airing on CBS and available for live streaming on Paramount+.

Indiana enters the contest with a 5-4 record, aiming to defend the Commissioner's Cup title they secured last year. The Fever recently bounced back from an unexpected loss to the Portland Fire with a home victory over the Atlanta Dream, where Kelsey Mitchell scored 25 points. That result improved their standing and saw them tip off the current tournament cycle 1-0.

The New York Liberty, sitting at 6-4, are looking to extend a current three-game winning streak. The team has navigated early-season adjustments under first-year head coach Chris DeMarco, recovering from a previous three-game losing slump. Their momentum was bolstered by a 97-82 victory over the Toronto Tempo on Wednesday night.

A significant portion of the narrative centres on player availability. Caitlin Clark is expected to play for Indiana despite recent back soreness and illness. Clark, whose 2025 season was cut short by injuries, has averaged nearly 20 points per contest since returning to form. She recently battled a stomach bug during the Atlanta game but finished with 17 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

For the Liberty, the primary injury concern is guard Sabrina Ionescu. Ionescu, who made her season debut on May 24 following an ankle injury, missed four games due to back soreness. Although she participated fully in Friday’s practice, DeMarco listed her as questionable for Saturday’s tip-off.

The Commissioner's Cup features a $500,000 prize pool and comprises 50 games scheduled between June 1 and 17. While the championship game does not count toward the regular WNBA season standings, the in-season tournament has seen five different champions in its first five years. The Liberty were runners-up in 2024, while the Fever claimed the inaugural title.

Betting markets via FanDuel list the New York Liberty as 2.5-point favourites, with an over/under set at 175.5 points. Indiana leads the all-time series against New York 52-38, though the Liberty won three out of four meetings last season.
