Fernandez move to Manchester City sets new benchmark for Premier League spending

Manchester City have finalised the acquisition of Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez for a joint-British transfer record fee of £125m, a move that pushes the club’s total summer expenditure to a Premier League record of £458m. According to BBC Sport, the deal surpasses the previous benchmark of £415m set by Liverpool last summer, highlighting the shifting financial landscape of the top flight.
The 25-year-old Argentina international joins the champions on transfer deadline day, concluding a protracted negotiation process that began in March. The fee matches the amount Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak last year, establishing a new ceiling for domestic transfers. For City, the signing is part of a broader strategy to rebuild the midfield after significant departures, including the sale of Rodri to Barcelona for £65m and Savio to Tottenham for £75m.
The transfer marks a pivotal moment for Chelsea, who are set to register a Premier League record for income generated from player sales. This deal represents the second-largest sale in the club’s history, trailing only the 2019 move of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid. Combined with the recent £65m sale of Nicolas Jackson to Aston Villa and Liam Delap’s £50m move to Nottingham Forest, Chelsea’s summer sales are expected to exceed £400m, a substantial increase on the previous record of approximately £300m.
City manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez at Chelsea, was keen to reunite with the midfielder after losing several key personnel this summer. The Italian’s desire to retain his former player was a central factor in the negotiations, which concluded after Chelsea imposed a deadline of 17:00 BST on 14 August for offers of £120m or more.
Fernandez’s departure from Stamford Bridge was marked by tension, with the player being booed by supporters during recent matches and reportedly asking to be left out of squad selections. In an open letter published on Instagram, Fernandez acknowledged the "difficult" nature of his decision, stating that Chelsea would "always be in my heart" despite the uncertainty that characterised the final months of his tenure.
The move also reflects the broader dynamics of the 2026-27 transfer window, where Fernandez becomes the fourth player to move to a Premier League club for a fee of at least £100m. This follows the £117m arrival of Morgan Rogers at Chelsea and Bradley Barcola’s £123m move to Liverpool, underscoring the premium now placed on elite midfield talent.
